HISTORY

The Continental Butterflies or Dwarf Spaniels have an extremely remote European origin. It is known since the Middle Ages and was obtained by the reduction of the Spaniel of hunting. The Phalène variety is oldest. Robust and elegant, they are not a modern race. These white and coloured puppies, in the fine members were reproduced already on Italian frescos of 13th and 14th century and hardly differed from those from today. They were used as model almost to all the painters: Véronèse, Titien, Rubens, Goya, Vélasquez. Nevertheless, it was the variety with falling ears which was represented (moths). It is towards 1700 that the butterfly with large right ears makes its appearance on a painting. This variety was created by various alliances, of which Spitz. The essential difference between the two varieties consists in the negligible port of the ears and, for unepart, in the character.

In spite of the worship from which the Continental Dwarf Spaniel during several centuries profited, the race declines at the beginning of the 20th century. For a few years, and under the impulse of its club, it has been again prosperous. It should be announced that apart from France, of England and the United States, the two varieties are regarded as two races with whole share.

Today, these dogs hardly evolved/moved, they remain marvellous dogs, full with vitality and equipped with a long life expectancy. Their proportions are balanced as a large dog but they are of small size. Their peeling semi-length, of an easy maintenance does not require particular grooming. Of a mobility to any test, they are able to carry out the same daily ways that a human being and their health correspond to their dynamism.
